POSTURAL RESTORATION
The Rejuvenation Center uses a unique approach to physical medicine and
rehabilitation called Postural Restoration. We are one of only 10 clinics
in the country fully certified to perform this type of advanced therapy.
This certification goes way beyond the scope of standard physical therapy
training and includes post graduate course work, clinical training, and
demonstrated proficiency using this multi-faceted treatment approach. Our
clinic’s commitment to this additional 2-3 year post graduate certification
process has given us a definitive edge providing physical therapy for
difficult back and neck pain patients.
This approach addresses any problems with underlying biomechanics which can
often lead to pain or functional limitation. All mechanical influences on
the body that restrict movement and contribute to improper joint and muscle
position are examined and taken into consideration. This type of in-depth
biomechanical assessment allows accurate diagnosis of any underlying structural
issues that may be contributing to a patient’s often complicated and chronic
problem. The Rejuvenation Center was one of the first clinics in the United States to
be certified in Postural Restoration
and the only clinic in Omaha Nebraska with this advanced level of training across
the entire spine rehab team.
The therapist performs an in-depth biomechanical assessment to identify any
postural asymmetries and biomechanical problems across the pelvic girdle, hips,
spine, rib cage and shoulder complex. This type of detailed analysis helps our
team determine an accurate diagnosis of any underlying structural issues that
may be contributing to a patient’s often complicated and chronic spine problem,
explaining why patients have different combinations of symptoms like scoliosis,
back, hip, shoulder and neck pain. Postural patterns during standing, sitting,
sleeping and work activities will also be evaluated to see if habitual tendencies
may be contributing to any identified pelvic, spine or rib cage asymmetries.
This type of therapy is delivered through specialized corrective exercises
and activities and is built around a home exercise program. These sessions
will start with a warm-up phase in one of our warm water hydro-massage beds
and then proceed into a one on one session with one of our Spine Therapists
trained in the assessment and treatment of biomechanical pelvic and rib cage
problems. A series of corrective exercises and techniques will be introduced
to help the patient use specific muscles to reposition any asymmetries and
then specific patterns of muscle to strengthen and stabilize the corrected
pelvic and rib cage positions. Instructions on how to shift and position the
body correctly during standing, sitting, sleeping and work activities will
also be a part of the home exercise program prescription.
Because the diaphragm has prominent attachment sites to both sides of the
rib cage and the anterior aspect of the lumbar spine, its position and the
way each patient uses it to breathe will be an important part of the exercise
session. Careful attention to proper technique and breathing with each part
of the exercise will be a priority for each of these sessions. Patients will
be given detailed instruction sheets, complete with images, arrows and written
instructions, to help ensure success with the home program.
The home exercise program will be designed around 15-30 minute home exercise
sessions performed 1 to 2 or 3 times per day, depending which part of the
program they are progressing through. They will continue these activities
for an additional 2 or 3 months on their own at home to ensure that they
maintain everything they achieved during the course of their rehabilitation.
During this 2-3 months, they will transition from needing to do the exercises
on a daily basis to much less frequent and eventually not needing them at all.
During this time, they will incorporate correct shifting and body position with
normal functional activities to help maintain the benefits of their exercise program.
